Class Descriptions

Our Mandarin language and culture classes for kids are designed to help students make steady and consistent progress. Class locations are listed on the Info/Contact page. For the class schedule, please send email to Jen: jennifer@xiaolongcenter.com

“Little Buns Playgroup”(babies – 3 years)
This class is designed to expose babies and young toddlers to Mandarin through play, songs, nursery rhymes and stories.  Songbooks and vocabulary sheets are provided. Mandarin only is spoken. Parent/caregiver is required to attend class.

“Little Buns Music Class”(babies – 4 years)
This class is a fun introduction to the Mandarin language through songs, activities, games and art.  Little Buns are provided with opportunities for hands-on activities and encouraged to learn through exploration. Songbooks and vocabulary sheets are provided. Mandarin only is spoken. Parent/caregiver is required to attend class.

“Little Dragons Beginner Class” (4 years – 7 years)
In the Beginner class, Little Dragons are introduced to the Mandarin language and to the Chinese culture through songs, picture cards, interactive games and fun art activities. They learn the four tones in Mandarin and basic words including animals, numbers, fruits, colors and parts of the body. Little Dragons practice greeting each other, answering simple questions as well writing basic Chinese characters. Other fun cultural activities include origami, paper cuts and lantern making. Workbooks and writing booklets are provided.

“Little Dragons Beginner/Intermediate Class” (8 years – 12+ years)
This class reviews and expands on topics from the Beginner class and introduces new topics each semester.  Little Dragons continue with active listening and speaking and are encouraged to engage in basic conversations in Mandarin.  They are also introduced to the four arts: brush painting, calligraphy, seal carving and poetry. Other cultural activities include Chinese paper cuts, tai chi and making dumplings to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Workbooks, writing booklets and materials for calligraphy/brush painting are provided.

“Chinese Brush Painting/Calligraphy Class” (7 years & up)
In this class, students learn the techniques of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy, exploring the beauty of these ancient art forms while discovering the origins of Chinese characters.

“Adult Beginner Class”
The Adult class focuses on developing conversational Mandarin skills as well as writing skills. Students study from the Integrated Chinese series.
